Metaphysical Attributes of Music

The Use of Music As Metaphysical Means and Instrumentation.

Art has a profound influence on almost everybody. It inspires us and catches our eyes and imagination. In it’s more pure form it is found in poster shops and museums. But as a marketing tool it virtually has no rival with the exception of music that accompanies it most of the time. Art has a great niche in this world. Whoever has eyes can and does pay attention to it. With the advent of computers and also digital photography art has exploded and can found wherever we may look or maybe have to look influencing the decisions we make. In moving pictures we come into connecting with art as it is animated and sometime have a direct connection as the saying goes ‘glued to the screen’.
Music is obviously not entirely the same as visual art but also provides a direct connection with what he listen to or hear. The same pain or disgust over an obscene image is also sometimes made by songs or music that are abrasive to us and that we don’t like to hear. When we enjoy the music we listen to it sometimes transports us to another place- where, we cannot really know for sure.
Studies are now showing and have been for some time that music changes patterns in the brain. It has shown that listening to your favorite music generates brain activity that is like a boost to the system. Other studies show that classical music can help with memory. mood and retention in the brain.
What is also interesting is to know that the musical scale of notes used today where also the same going back hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Who came up with the exact notes? It is almost a miracle that the notes that are used today were used from the beginning of music mainly. There has been research that shows in Africa there are notes that are used that go in between the musical scale used in modern times giving an evermore abundance of sounds and tones. Though without the notes of the scale today, if it was not the standard, the result would be a cacophony.
in light of the title above of music having a metaphysical quality, it means to say at least two things. One is if you take for example the music of a music therapy disc, and if it is good, it can have an effect of one, being calming, yet music of that kind and new age music or sometimes ambient, trance, or experimental music even in a rock format, can and does have an effect on brain activity whether it is calming or entrancing or euphoric- any of those labels can do, however a lot of time what one experiences when they listen to something likable to them is an altered state even if it is only for the duration of the song. Where Art intrigues us, music becomes intriguing.
How does a note influence what we feel? We are mostly addicted to a degree to the five senses and don’t mind when it comes to the art or writing or music that we like and treasure.
There is always a fine line between engaging in the appreciation of the Arts and other times having a s sensory overload. There is a balance at play. Sometimes it can tip too much to either side, but usually we are free when to say we had enough or alternately to say I’d like more.
To round things off. One of the principles of music having a metaphysical or spiritual effect has been known throughout time. For society to remain and function in a healthy way the medium of music should not be abused. Perhaps because of the scale and structure of chords, the sound of harmony and melody keeps music to be more of a pure type of art. Of course it can be challenged, changed as in atonal music and some who experiment with noise. However more often than not the sound of harmony is chosen over cacophony more often. Though avante garde and atonal music is interesting and provides a new door, music that is pleasing the hear is more commonly accepted in most of the world. Like most art we must preserve that which is conducive to growth and evolution of the world. Whatever one prefers and likes to hear or to see or observe is up to themselves, but know that the scale and chords provide a unifying principle as a tool for the betterment of the world as the spectrum to the eye.

New Music for Rock, Ambient and Electronic

A Preview Into Music and New Music in A General Outlay

Lately when a band or group or artist that is lesser known or new into the scene presents their new album, song or cd there is usually a freshness to it most of the time. Perhaps they have been working with the latest equipment or that there is such a fervor when someone puts out their first album or even their latest one as well.
Sounds change with the times. Companies that make effects units, pre-amps and digital software usually can stay ahead of the game and usher in devices that will bring that new sound to the next and newer audience, while hopefully pleasing the old ones too.
There are also lots of effects units that can emulate an older sound, though many say it can never still replicate the sound exactly therefor the reason why old equipment can be so pricey in their range.
It can only make sense to follow along or at least keep tabs on the latest sounds. It does not necessarily or even in at all take away from the musicianship of the artist.
When a new record is made, it is the songs as well as the sounds that can make an album stand the test of time. Ironically there are songs, say from the seventies that at one time sounded dated and then perhaps years later it suddenly sounds totally good and very well produced in turn. When that happens it usually has proved that it was a well produced album after all as the latest opinion is the one that stands-of course consider the source.
Ox Cohen is the author if this site and is musician, composer an maker of a four album collection.
Four albums are presented in the collection and somehow each is very different from each other. They were created in span of about 12 years. I wanted to present these collections to you to highlight a nuance from this sight. I have been playing guitar over 29 years. Have practiced piano and cello respectively for around 4 years for each. Many might not know enough about the albums and would naturally be hesitant to purchase one because of this unknown factor. They are available to hear samples at and can also be tried out at itunes as well.
SO, I’d like just to write a little of each album to provide extra information so you might know what you would be getting if you decided to go and make a purchase on one or more of them.
Each album was made in hopes to help one with mood, relaxation and a thaumaturgical element that may be able to improve your life. Though I cannot truly guarantee that for anyone or everyone as well.
The first album Moon Dust is a free-for experimental endeavor using a on-in all digital studio that was made in the early 2000’s. It combines new-age with rock, jazz and ambient music influences. They are mainly a kind mood-rock collection that is similar to what a movie soundtrack might sound like. But, it is also electronic sounding with exception of a couple pieces that are featuring solo instrumentals…guitar and piano.
Sky Nine is perhaps the most relied upon and spans from electronic rock, ambient rock with some free-form jazz rock pieces. It is very experimental form start to finish but mainly displays a kind of serenity throughout. It might be the best for the thaumaturgical component.
Tri Axis Triple Works is the third album and that last one that is an instrumental album like the previous 2 albums. These songs are electronic sounding also and are a wide range of different kinds of instrumentals that can be composed. There is almost every genre emulated in these songs and it has a firmer, somewhat more polished sound to the album and is experimental as well from a composing stance.
The last and final album created is called IV Sing. It is called that because it is the fourth album and has vocals, so it is not an instrumental. I used a Drummer to add tracks to the songs and the album is manly a rock album but it also varies a little in some of the moods, modes and styles through out. It is a Songwriters’ album and in some ways lighter than the previous ones and in a way more musical.
I hope you all had time to appreciate this site. There will be more blogs and I won’t go into too much of my albums or songs…However I feel like presenting a picture so you can hopefully decide for yourselves if it is something for you.
Thank you. Hope to see you back here and hope you enjoy the site and the music if you can as well.

Music Into The 21st Century

It’s interesting to kind of know or see that some music from the last 40-50 years is now classic and considered something that is long ago or for some too long ago. I think music followed more or less a natural progression until the 90’’s. Of course we are talking popular music with all it’s subdivided genres. Though Blues and Jazz go back within a century…and classical music has it’s modern composers making music also within one hundred years.

Let’s start with the 1950’s- the birth of Rock and Roll or so it was called that borrowed heavily on Blues which came before it and has recordings  as early as the first third of the 20th century. In the 1950’s it was a burst of new music and one band and artist came on the heels of another. Truly it’s an era that can not be duplicated both for the songwriting and also for it’s sound. Though it was in some ways influenced by the music of the 40’s, the new artists and bands pioneered the blueprint for Rock and Roll. It is an interesting thing to note that the sound(s) which came from the studio were very similar and that would be how music would be produced up until the late 20th to the 21st century. The music of the 50’s was about Pop, Dance, and Relationships like a retelling of the bards in centuries long ago.

With the Beatles and bands imitating them the era grew into the 60’s where in the middle of the 60’s you could sense a slow but sure departure from the energetic showing of the 50’s into a broader music and more experimental especially toward the late 60’s into the seventies. With the hippie movement songs were about experimentation with mind powers and more issues on the feminine movement and about experiences that were not always so happy or not always easily defined. The great performers of the 60’s though is still prominent today which can tell you what forces they really were in music. Though the 50’s were the birth of Rock and Roll for the mainstream, the 60’s showed real creativity and a new look for community in some cases and not just the relationship of boy-girl topics and psychedelic rock.

After the early 70’s when the hippie movement was declining and people were distressed about the Vietnam war, more anti-establishment views came out and there were songs about trying to make peace as well as the dark subjects of human relations and it’s upbeat topics as well.

The 70’s were giving birth to a big panorama of not only music but subjects as well. With the early 70’s came the blueprint for Heavy Metal, Art Rock, New soul music, Glam music and everything in between. Just like the 60’s were an explosion of new bands and music that was evolving form the 50’s, the 70’s took the experimental flower age into new frontiers with some thoughts about space probably influenced by the moon landing.

The first heavy metal bands came mostly in the early 70’s. As the era progressed along there were more Art Rock bands and influences of more bands by the new-age movement. Somewhere in the mid to late 70’s there became a pop scene or what was called bubble-gum pop, though this term had been used before, however songs became in some ways more laid back, a softer side to the music previously had seemed to come in the mainstream with exceptions of the Progressive, Art Rock, and Heavy metal bands that were toiling along.

Then in the late 70’s there came Disco, a complete opposite of the whole era and era of the 60’s…With stomping beats sometimes with drum machines and a goal alone to get people to dance. Around the end of the 70’s and in a sticking contrast to all the music before including disco came Punk music. Punk was not about  the finesse and musicianship of Progressive Rock bands nor was much about anything other than a bit of Rock but to make music that was a ‘not-music’ even though some were melodious to an extent, it was a lot about shouting and keeping the guitar part simple however a lot of great bands and musicians came from the Punk Music even up to today.

With all of the great effort of the music of the 1970’s, the 80’ was for the most part a new field for music. On the onset borrowing from Punk, Rock and even some of the dance effect of Disco, the 80’s were a brand new time for music where everything before was eclipsed by the fresh, new, shininess of the the rock and pop scene of the 80’s.

It seemed as though everyone was willing to forget the 70’s and go into the new unexposed territory combining Synths, Guitars, Drum machines and the like thought Metal bands were starting to make big influences and a lot of the new kind of metal was gaining audience starting from the last years of the 70’s into the 80’s. As well other bands did not abandon their rock roots either, but on the radio most of the music was revolved around pop with exception of select and hard to find stations.

The 80’s was the era also when Alternative music had began with some growing up from their roots in Punk and others completely experimental and off the dial. It would be the influence of the Alternative music of the 80’s that later would be the Alternative coming into the 90’s and up until just before the 21st century.

That said with the scene in the late 80’s being saturated with Pop and into the first year of the 90’s finally the music found Alternative music of the early 90’s which would grow and mutate into Alternative of the mid 90’s. It was one of the few genres to change a scene and the culture into something different like the era of the mid to late 60’s did for music.

Then from the late 90’s into the first or so year of the new century were Punk-Rap Metal bands against the pole of Bubble gum Pop again with Boy Bands sprouting up as they have a tendency to do.

However, the music of the early 21st century was not easily definable and there still were plenty of bands with the Alternative rub and other bands that have been around making new and impressive songs. The culture of music of the 21st century has seemed to be of a wider mix of genres an types of bands and sounds more than any other era before it. Perhaps with the use of computers having a role more in production has given artists greater ability to craft their sound as well as technology in the instruments and amplifiers etc themselves.

It seems as though music is at a crossroads now in the beginning of the 21st century and that we can speculate of what will be the next game-changer in music. With all of the influences from before, from the 50’s until now the next great thing could be well…anything.

Vantage of Radio Stations

High stretched out peering up over most vantage points, a radio antennae built and made to transmit signal looms. Somewhere near by, sometimes in a building that holds it and sometimes just a shy distance is where the programming takes place; the idle chattering and a vast library of music or snippets from other broadcasts and commercial segments takes hold.

Thousands of tall structures overlook across a large space of land. Yet in particular to each one a completely different set of shows and music.

The far reach of the antennas are pretty vast most covering a city size and usually further out a predetermined set of miles, though not always totally exact.

Beams of high fidelity, usually, sound travels into the device. For car or radio or a satellite stream, what an odd way to have your particular kind of show or music. As odd as internet cables or wireless transmission. I guess we are connected in this way to a decent experience and we are all connected by these waves and these days it would be hard, pretty hard, to go through a day or a few without this connection.

Some radio shows have the wherewithal to help us into a better day as well with our preferred music. With the kind of talent of a radio show or the music we prefer we are ebbed along into our desired goal. It almost makes barely any sense yet this is how we seem to progress sometimes.

If you get a little metaphysical or new age, our own frequency or vibes might have something to do with that which comes back. On the other hand, art is what it is as a finished product at least on radio, computer or satellite. Once it is ready for distribution, you may or may not like it, however as things are sometimes not easily explained, you might once like it and then again not like it.

A vast network makes up the radio stations on our dials. They force us into a soundtrack of our lives. When things go well, we usually somehow seem pleased with the content we listen to although it is also a matter of choice. What we hear with our ears plays into what we see with our eyes and a scene is made.

Sometimes are listening pleasure is bitterly interrupted by annoying or inconsequential commercials but there is need for them similar to when you would watch music videos with such pleasure then change the channel on the commercials which might be why there are no or hardly any music videos these days.

Where I am there are now at least four radio stations on FM that play a variety of music and songs. They change the list like a jukebox or a cd player on shuffle and it can be a nice relief sometimes or at other times it sounds like a bad mix like a soup with ingredients that do not go together and end up tasting like muck.

Radio stations change. There were several times where my favorite radio station went out of there lease so to speak and another, usually more modern or current trend of a station overtook them. It happens. It always stinks. So, it is fortunate if you find anything as good as that was on the new array of radio stations that currently are running.

We might go about our day, at times placidly until we go and turn on our radio or satellite and it takes us back to our finer moods and realigns us, reminding us of a world out there. For sometimes we can be addicted to what we see and what we hear and beaming to us across miles is another universe which is our universe reminding us of another world to which we can be a part of.

Art Rock Commentary

Somewhere out of big bubbling sea of hits and so called Pop of the late 60’s started a kind of music in the background just starting to seep it’s way into Rock culture and to an extent the mainstream.

Art Rock as it was when it began was not exactly widely known to the general masses, but it was a sort of treat for those who knew where to find it, although some Art Rock bands were easy to find on the Radar speaking of bands like Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd would be always known as an Art Rock band form the start to their last album. There are sometimes a convergence in differentiating Art Rock from Progressive Rock bands. A band like Pink Floyd seemed to remain Art Rock without needing to be one if it did not so choose but remained an Art Rock band anyway.

Bands like Yes and Genesis seemed to be qualified as Art rock bands right from there start. Genesis is a band that could teeter between Art and Progressive Rock but may be more likened to have chosen the Art Rock course despite their musicianship which could be putting them in either category…but theirs is a reason why Art Rock is truly a delight.

It is something that hangs on the borders of Popular music and really fills a gap in listening to music that Pop music simply cannot fill.

Art rock stretches the ears and the mind to places that mainstream and contemporary pop cannot do alone. It’s like literally viewing a Dali painting or sometimes Geiger sometimes Warhol or anywhere in between compared to paintings from a classical period or ordinary pictures of people or landscapes…The ears can only take too much as well as the eyes before it craves what cannot normally be there.

So for many Art Rock fills that gap that the senses are missing.

Rush could be an art rock band, but is mostly thought of as Progressive. Here and then again there is a fine line between Art and Progressive rock though they much to do with each other…However Progressive Rock is likened mostly Harder Rock, with increased drumming and a leaning from Hard Rock to Heavy Metal as another type of Progressive Rock Music.

Art Rock might not be considered all the time to the Heavier style of music but can placid and tranquil.

Art Rock makes a declaration most of the time. What it says is something like: This is not normal, this may not be what you want to hear, or to some it is This is exactly what you want to hear and you might not thought anyone would have said it. To a lot of music fans Art Rock is a definite breath of fresh air like alternative music was for some in the early 90’s.

It is the color that is not always on the palate…It is the flavor that is least available compared to the majority of music. I would guess that the culture of the 60’s from which it began until now had an effect on Art Rock and it’s music. It is decisively contemporary and modern if it be futuristic or overtly dream orientated.

Art rock seem to play and hint along the scope of ones Psyche and mind-scape. It is for that reason perhaps that drug-use is sometimes thought of an accessory to Art Rock like it would be to Psychedelic Rock but I don’t think that is truly necessary. The music itself should provide otherworldly feeling that one derives from it.
